After a Record Year: Lakrids by Bülow May Get New Owners – Johan Bülow: 'I Follow My Intuition'

The Swedish private equity firm Valedo Partners, which acquired 75% of Lakrids by Bülow’s shares in 2016, is now considering selling the popular Danish licorice brand – one of the most remarkable success stories in Danish entrepreneurship.

The licorice empire began as a small shop in Svaneke, Bornholm, in 2007 and has since evolved into a global player. Today, the company operates worldwide, with Germany emerging as its largest market. The Danish market accounts for less than one-third of the total revenue, showcasing Lakrids by Bülow’s impressive international success.

According to Danish business publication Børsen, Valedo has initiated the sales process and enlisted the investment bank Carnegie to identify potential buyers.

Lakrids by Bülow has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors. Board Chairman Tue Mantoni told Børsen:
“A private equity firm like Valedo cannot remain the majority owner forever. I cannot comment on the timing.”

Speculation about potential buyers has already begun, with names like Mars, Nestlé, and Orkla mentioned as likely contenders.

In 2023, Lakrids by Bülow achieved its highest revenue in company history, marking a milestone for the brand.

What Does Johan Bülow Say?

Johan Bülow, who still owns approximately 20% of the company, is open to remaining involved, depending on the new owners:
“If everything aligns, I see no reason why I shouldn’t continue,” he says.

Reflecting on his approach to business partnerships, he adds:
“For years, I’ve run my business based on the belief that if my intuition tells me these are the right people to work with, I’m more than happy to proceed.”

The future of Johan Bülow’s licorice empire now depends on Valedo’s choice of a new owner – and how they envision shaping the next chapter of this iconic Danish brand.
